| A digital audio player (DAP) is a device that stores, organizes and plays audio files. It is more commonly referred to as an MP3 player because of the MP3 format's ubiquity, but DAPs often play many additional file formats. Some formats are proprietary, such as Windows Media Audio (WMA), and to a degree, Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) and MP3. Some of these formats also may incorporate restrictive DRM technology, such as Janus and FairPlay, which are often part of certain paid download sites.

| Taking a couple steps back in this history, podcasting would not have happened without the rapid spread of MP3 files and MP3 players. MP3s allow audio to be compressed into small enough files to be transferred on the internet and stored on small devices. MP3 players came about to allow people to take their music with them on the go. As MP3 players have spread and the storage on them has gotten larger, listeners have started looking for new audio content to take on the go. Not only that, but consumers are getting tired of the same old broadcast radio content that is controlled by large corporations.

| From the number of white earbuds you see these days, their cords streaming out of people’s ears and ending in some hidden part of their coats or handbags, you hardly need a statistic to tell you that the MP3 player is everywhere. By 1999, the digital music revolution had slowly begun, yet several factors have likely boosted its popularity even further in this millennium. Today’s MP3 players are evidence of the evolution in terms of features and design. Where early players played music and held a few photos, today’s models sport everything: from alarm clocks to games to FM stereo to video sharing to audio/video recording to WiFi connectivity.
